Dealing with Trolls

Peeps, we’ve said it before and we’re saying it again.

When a truly nasty troll hits the blog, DO NOT RESPOND TO IT!!! It craves attention, and when you GIVE it attention it WILL NOT GO AWAY!! Trolls of this sort (such as the troll we’re dealing with today) are only trying to get a rise out of people, and if someone–ANYone–responds to it even obliquely, it thinks it has won and will continue its assault.

If you pretend it is not there and completely ignore it, it will go away and find another place where it can get responses. The troll on the blog today would have been gone within an hour if people had just ignored its existence and pretended it wasn’t there.

Now don’t get me wrong–I enjoy poking entertaining trolls as much as the next person. But I think we all know that this isn’t an entertaining troll. So please. Do not feed the trolls…the consequences are much, much worse that way.

Theng-kew.

  1. Yesterdays troll wasn’t on FB by accident; he’s on there regularly. More of a stalker than a typical attention whore troll. He was the one responding to every other post, especially on the video fail. It was pretty hard to avoid him…

Of course I agree that we shouldn’t overfeed him, but on the other hand I don’t like to see friends getting insulted or harrassed without some sort of response.

Unfortunately, this sorry little loser IMO considers everything as a win for him. Blog borks, spamming, leaving insults without getting a response, leaving insults and getting a response… Banning is the only option for this one. And that will cause a blog bork, no matter what (because he constantly commented in the middle of conversations).

The only thing he most likely doesn’t see as a win is when he has to realize that he isn’t really causing too much emotions, other than mild amusement. I think he deserves some ridicule before he gets banned.

    Just my 0,002 Cents.

  2. I’ve been around blogs only for a couple years, and have always been intrigued by this “troll” issue. I understand there are people who make dumb, uneducated, sometimes insulting comments with the intention of hurting others, getting attention and sometimes just for the hell of it. It is just my opinion, of course, but I think everyone should just get over the whole situation.

You can’t control other’s. They are not committing a crime. They are posting on public sites. They have a right to. I’m not saying I like it, (if it happened on a website I owned, I’d moderate the crap out of it) what I’m saying is, you don’t have to react to it.

If I got in fights with every idiot who insults me or taunts me, I’d be in a hospital or jail. I rather save me the irritation and not give worth to the unworthy.

After this few years reading different blogs, I’ve become accustomed to ignoring spam and trolls. Sometimes I still reply, but I know full well they might say something else I won’t like. If you got the patience to attempt to educate other’s, own it if they are too stubborn to be willing to learn.

Honestly, the response to the “troll issue”, as I’ve come to call it, is sometimes comparable to the issue itself. I’ve read a lot of comments on the issue and they talk about it like the world will be destroyed by trolls or something. Reading all those comments is tiring as well.

I think the best solution is what the failpeeps did: make their own site, which they control themselves (or so I’m led to believe).

I don’t usually write this long of a comment, but I thought some might find my points interesting, if not, I apologize as this must have been also tiring to read.
